Intro to Sashiko-Style Invisible Mending

Monday, June 24th, 6 – 8 PM

In this introductory class to visible mending students will create simple but unique exterior patch repairs and/or embellishments to their denim or medium-weight twill garments, inspired by the ancient Japanese tradition of Sashiko stitching. We will consider environmental effects of our throw-away clothing culture, as well as the concepts of “slow fashion,” “mindful mending,” individuality, and responsible sourcing. Each student will leave with 2 patches (provided), written materials for home reference, and inspiration to turn their current wardrobe into something special instead of something trashed.

Ages 13 & up (accompanied by an adult) are allowed. This class is open to all skill levels.

Intro to Plaster Casting

Thursday, June 27th, 6 – 9 PM

In this hands-on workshop, led by CMS Artist In Residence Ernest Montenegro, students will learn the fundamentals of plaster casting. Students will get to make a simple two piece mold and cast a pear in plaster, which they can take home and decorate as they wish!
