Although Hollywood might have us believe that great instructors are great because of their innate talent (an inspired teacher stands on his desk and all students suddenly care about poetry!), in reality, there are technical moves and structures that teachers use to help their students learn.
For example, good lessons draw from established formats or templates, which can be varied with creativity. Lesson formats are the result of logical, careful planning, which any instructor can be taught to use effectively. In this session, you will learn about the five-part lesson plan– the “bread and butter” of teachers’ work—designed to introduce new content and help students know or be able to do something by the end of the lesson.
Additionally, this session will introduce participants to important instructional strategies designed to engage people in learning, motivate, organize information for understanding, and provide feedback to learners about their own learning.
Finally, this session will give you a basic introduction to the latest research behind how people learn new information or skills and apply it in real-world contexts.
While we know that teaching is complex and cannot be taught in a single session, this toe-dip into good instruction should be a helpful start!
This event is open to the public, but preferential space will be offered to those that wish to become instructors at The Claremont Makerspace.

Join us for 3D PRINT CLUB! Every week, we’ll get together and participate in an open design session. This event is all about self-directed learning and hanging out with other people working on 3D designs or prints. Bring your own laptop or make use of the (first come-first-serve) Makerspace laptops loaded with Fusion 360.
3D Print Club is presented free, but registration is required.

CMS’ CNC Shopbot router is an incredibly versatile machine that can be used to make everything from furniture to puzzles, to guitars to sculptures. To help create a more intensive learning environment around the Shopbot, CMS will be creating a meetup group, the CNC Shopbot SLUG (Super Learner User Group) for users to show-off their creations and talk about their projects.
This month’s SLUG discussion will focus on creating text on the ShopBot. We will discuss our experiences with various materials, bits and cut depths to see if we can dial in the sweet spot.

The Claremont Makerspace and The Center for Women and Enterprise will be partnering to bring this special event. Often business owners price their products simply by marking up their cost. Although margin is an important consideration, it is not the only factor when determining the price of a product or service. Understanding your customers’ perceived value and establishing a pricing strategy that is right for your market is as important to your success as understanding your costs and breakeven point. Registration closes 9/9 at 5 PM.
Wednesday, September 11th 6 – 8:30 PM
Intro to 3D Printing is for anyone that has zero to little experience with 3D Printing. We will provide an overview of 3D printers and the printing process – covering everything from the way 3D printers are built through the ways we use them to create objects. In this beginner level class, we will discuss different methods of 3D printing and cover the fundamental steps for designing and printing models. Participants will get to know how the MakerSpace’s printers – the LulzBot Taz 6 and Lulzbot Mini – work, and how to use them safely. Following the workshop, participants will have the opportunity to sign-up for certification sessions on these machines, so that they can use them on their own at the CMS. This class will run Wednesday, September 11th from 6:30 – 8:30.
Bringing your own laptop is strongly encouraged! Only two spots remain!
Tuesday, September 17th 6 – 8:15 PM
We will cultivate a Zen state of mind by exploring aspects of the Japanese Tea Ceremony. We’ll look at images of Japanese Ink Paintings and learn the basic brush strokes used in this specific type of painting. These techniques can be applied to a variety of painting media. The art is in the touch of the brush stroke, quality of the line, appreciation of the natural world, and the beauty in asymmetry. All supplies are provided. We’ll create multiple paintings. Come to class dressed to paint. Class time 2 hours 15 min.
Wednesday, September 18th 6 – 8:30 PM
This class is truly designed with the beginner in mind and serves as a great introduction to the world of physical computing! It is for anyone who has never played around with Arduino before and those who have played around a little bit but aren’t entirely sure about how the basics work. We’ll blink some lights, turn some motors, read some sensors and make a little noise. We’ll touch on some very basic programming and prototyping concepts as well!
Registration for this class will close on 9/16 at 5 PM.

Need some extra space for your next project/business/creative experiment?
While all departments of the CMS offer shared workspace, CMS Personal Studio Spaces provide personal work areas for dedicated users to call their own. Personal studio spaces are made up of 48″ dividers and come in sizes of 60 sq/ft and 100 sq/ft , with each studio including 2 power outlets and an Ethernet jack. Studio Members may fit up their studios however they wish (as long as it’s all code compliant and respectful of others), and may share their personal studio spaces with other CMS members. CMS Instructors come from a variety of skill sets and backgrounds, the unifying characteristic being a desire to share their knowledge and expertise. CMS is always interested in finding new and qualified instructors to lead tool training, create hands-on projects, explain interesting concepts and impart their knowledge. Workshops can range from within one of our departments (Woodshop, Machine Shop, Welding, Sewing, Textiles, Jewelry, Electronics, Laser Cutting, 3D Printing) to computer and software skills, entrepreneurial readiness, hobby development, crafting and a lot more.
