Creative Cutting With The Cricut

The CMS’s Cricut cutting machine is a versatile tool that uses precision blades, and a computerized interface, to cut a wide variety of materials – including fabrics, leather, vinyl and more. Students will get familiar with the Cricut through a number of small projects (which they can keep) and will learn about a range of the Cricuts features and capabilities.
The goal of this introductory class is for students to get comfortable with the Cricuts primary features, so that they can use the machine for their own creative projects following the class. Following Creative Cutting with the Cricut, students will be invited to come back for a Tool Certification Session at no additional cost. Following the successful completion of the Certification, students (with Membership) will be permitted to use the CMS’s Cricut cutting machine independently.
Materials costs are included in the workshop fee. If you are Cricut owner, you are more than welcome to bring your personal machine to this class. Creative Cutting with The Cricut happens this Thursday, September 26th, 6 – 8 PM.

Join us for 3D PRINT CLUB! Every week, we’ll get together and participate in an open design session. This event is all about self-directed learning and hanging out with other people working on 3D designs or prints. Bring your own laptop or make use of the (first come-first-serve) Makerspace laptops loaded with Fusion 360.
3D Print Club is presented free, but registration is required.
Wednesday, September 25th, 5:30 – 8:30 PM
In this workshop, you’ll learn the basics of silver-smithing while you make a simple silver ring! The instructor will guide you through various options for how to embellish your band, the shape of which you will get to choose. You’ll try soldering and learn how to polish your finished product into a beautiful ring! No experience necessary. All materials will be provided, and $5 materials fee is included in the registration cost.
September 25th, 6 – 8:30 PM
Vibrance and energy shimmer on the canvas of the impressionist painter. Working in an intuitive manner, they captured in color, rhythm and the spontaneity of the moment. It was a time of change, a time of new ideas, and innovation. The impressionist artists developed a kind of painterly short hand, using visible brush strokes to recreate the fleeting qualities of light as it danced across the natural world. In this class, we will discuss how the industrial revolution effected the impressionist artists and consider the technology revolution of our own time. Everyone will be encouraged to develop their own personal intuitive style of painting. We will learn about color and use quick drying acrylic paint on canvas to create our paintings. Come to class dressed to paint. All supplies provided.
This class is for Teens to Adults.

Rescheduled – Tuesday, October 1st, 6 PM
It’s that time of year! Brown Bats begin to look for a winter residence, often seen squeezing through and into cracks, nooks and crannies in our homes. These beneficial mammals will consume hundreds of mosquitoes a day all they need is a suitable place to winter over. Join us for this introductory woodworking class as we build bat houses and finish them with personal touches. Simple woodworking tools will be utilized to construct a ready to hang bat house. No previous woodworking experience needed. All construction materials supplied in the class. Please bring items to decorate your bat house (some provided) and wear closed toed shoes. Kids 12 & up allowed with the accompany of an adult.
Intro to Sewing: Make A Recycled Bag
Tuesday, October 1st, 6 – 8 PM
Want to help solidify your basic sewing skills while making a tough (yet pretty!) grocery tote? Using grain feed bags we will up-cycle these to reusable grocery totes! Choice of pictures and colors available. Do you love Horses? Pigs? Dogs? Purple? Pink? Many choices! And environmentally friendly. This is a great project to help you learn to sew, or practice your basic skills!
Tuesday, October 1st, 6 – 7 PM
Wide Format Printer 101 will prepare members to use the awesome CMS Wide Format printer. Participants in the class will learn about digital printing and different approaches depending on the need, basic printer operation including loading sheet and roll paper and how to prepare and print from photoshop/illustrator and basic setup. This class will prepare participants to be certified for the basic operation at a follow up session.

Understanding the Harmonograph
Wednesday, October 2nd, 6 – 8 PM
The harmonograph is a mechanical device that employs pendulums to create a geometric image. The machine is the about size of a card table and looks like a kinetic sculpture that makes its own art. The drawings created are complex, abstract, encapsulate movement, and have the illusion of 3-dimensions. As the designs emerge observers find the motion to be mesmerizing and hypnotic.
This workshop will explore the history, design, and science behind the motion of the harmonograph. We will demonstrate a multitude of ways to operate the machine and how to create various designs. There will be a variety of pens and paper available for students to experiment with to create their own designs.

While all departments of the CMS offer shared workspace, CMS Personal Studio Spaces provide personal work areas for dedicated users to call their own. Personal studio spaces are made up of 48″ dividers and come in sizes of 60 sq/ft and 100 sq/ft , with each studio including 2 power outlets and an Ethernet jack. Studio Members may fit up their studios however they wish (as long as it’s all code compliant and respectful of others), and may share their personal studio spaces with other CMS members.
