Careers in Solar

Makers,

Interested in learning what kind of backgrounds, skills and expertise is required to get into solar? Want to join the emerging workforce and learn how solar professionals made their way into the industry? Join members of local solar installation companies at Careers in Solar on Tuesday April 16th at 6 PM to find out how they made their way into the industry, the future projections of solar careers and how you can find a job in solar. This event will include a Q&A. Please register for this event.

Upcoming Events

This Tuesday is 3D Print Club.  Every week, we’ll get together and participate in a freestyle design session. In a freestyle, participants simply design what they want to. There will also be various design challenges each week if you’re looking for inspiration, and an instructor will be present to offer advice and otherwise help troubleshoot as you create and print designs. Instructor-supported software (and software available on the Makerspace computers) includes Tinkercad and Fusion 360. If you’re an experienced 3D designer, bring your laptop and favorite design software! We’ll also spend time cleaning up our prints and discussing what goes into making the best print possible. This event runs as a 3 month session. At the end of each session we’ll collect our favorite and best prints and have an open showing.

Tuesday also features Intro to CNC Routing, an overview of our incredibly versatile Shopbot. Found in our woodshop, this tool can be used for everything from creating your own furniture to 3D wood sculpting. Join us from 6- 9, this Tuesday.

We recently added many classes through the month.

Make A Recycled Bag at CMS!

Makers,

Thank you to all that joined us for Sustainability & The Art of Living Well this past Saturday. We had some lively discussions, enjoyed some excellent speakers and learned about resources within our community. Thank you to CMS member & past Artist In Residence, Allison Zito, for organizing such a fun event. We’d also like to thank all of the presenters, supporters and sponsors. For more information, check out this article from The Eagle Times.

Upcoming Events

Tomorrow! Join us for Make A Recycled Bag. Learn to make a tough yet pretty grocery tote from recycled grain feed bags.  Choice of pictures and colors available. Do you love Horses? Pigs? Dogs? Purple? Pink? Many choices! And environmentally friendly. Some sewing knowledge is strongly encouraged for this relatively simple project.

Also, tomorrow is our weekly 3D Print Club!

On Thursday, join us for Intro to Arduino. This class is truly designed with the beginner in mind and serves as a great introduction to the world of physical computing! It is for anyone who has never played around with Arduino before and those who have played around a little bit but aren’t entirely sure about how the basics work. We’ll blink some lights, turn some motors, read some sensors and make a little noise. We’ll touch on some very basic programming and prototyping concepts as well!

And, on Sunday, come learn how to Make An LED Hourglass. Plenty of parts means plenty of soldering practice. Using light-emitting diodes (LEDs) as grains of “sand” to simulate the movement of the hourglass, the upper “sand” trickles down one by one, piling up at the bottom. Flip the hourglass over and it starts all over again. Family pairs (adult / child aged 10+) assembling an hourglass together are welcome. Note that your child will be working with a hot soldering iron.

Upcoming Events

Throughout April, we will be featuring a number of events around upcycling and sustainability. On Tuesday, April 9th, join us for Make A Recycled Bag.

On Tuesday, April 16th, we will be holding a Q&A with local installers about careers in solar technology. Careers in Solar Energy is open to anyone interested in learning more about the skills, background and future within this impressive industry.

On Tuesday, April 29th, we will have a follow up presentation on solar technology with Beyond Solar 101. Bring your questions about everything solar and have them answered by an industry professional!

On April 30th, join us for Intro to Sashiko-Inspired Visible Mending. In this introductory class to visible mending, students will create simple but unique exterior patch repairs and/or embellishments to their denim or medium-weight twill garments, inspired by the ancient Japanese tradition of Sashiko stitching. We will consider environmental effects of our throw-away clothing culture, as well as the concepts of “slow fashion,” “mindful mending,” individuality, and responsible sourcing. Each student will leave with 2 patches (provided), written materials for home reference, and inspiration to turn their current wardrobe into something special instead of something trashed.
